A Modern Family: Mom, Dad, Daughter, and Their Pet Bear

Bob Scott is an animator and cartoonist from the Bay Area, and a graduate from the California Institute of the Arts film animation program. Scott’s animated short 'Late Night with Myron' was part of the 1988 theatrical compilation film entitled 'Outrageous Animation'. His animation has been seen in numerous animated feature films such as Pixar’s 'Toy Story 3' (2010), 'Ratatouille' (2007), 'WALL-E' (2008), 'The Incredibles' (2004) and Dreamworks Animation's 'The Prince of Egypt' (1998), among others.

He is also the creator of the syndicated comic strip Bear With Me, a hilarious all-ages webcomic about 11-year-old Molly and her 900 lb. pet grizzly bear who is afraid of everything. The webcomics have been collected into a beautifully bound hardcover book by Cameron + Company titled Molly and the Bear.

Molly and the Bear is a fun, original family friendly comic that explores the home life of 11-year-old Molly, her mother, her father, and her pet bear. After accidentally wandering into Molly's home and taking a nap on her couch, Molly quickly adopted Bear into the family, much to her father's dismay. After living outdoors where everything is terrifying, moving to the suburbs and living with Molly has been a wonderful change of pace for Bear - even if he is still afraid of the dark, the light, spiders, water, and well... everything!

Scott's art is akin to Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes and Jim Davis' work on Garfield. Bringing a refreshing new take to the partner-in-crime all-ages comic world, Molly and the Bear is an entertaining and wholesome read that speaks to everyone. While many of the comic strips are standalones, the compilation book carefully orchestrates each panel so they tell a riveting adventure tale between Molly and her beloved, furry best friend.

While the art and humor behind the series is entertaining alone, one of the most compelling thing about Molly and the Bear is their relationship. Molly is a huge caliming influence on Bear. While many stories still showcase girls in submissive roles or in need of rescuing, Molly is a strong and fearless 11-year-old who protects her best friend without falter. While Molly is a major support figure in Bear's life, Bear reciprocates his affections to Molly by accompanying her on adventures (despite his countless fears), and providing her with a deep friendship.

Molly and the Bear is a wonderful collection of heartfelt and hilarious comic strips. The hardcover binding is perfect for shelving or as a coffee table read, and provides big, clear reproductions of the webcomic. The collection also provides several extras, including sketchbook pages, a process sequence showing how Scott produces the strip from thumbnail to final strip, a selection of color strips, and more!
