Perry Bible Fellowships’s Nick Gurewitch kicks off Monsters of Webcomics Exhibit
The Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco is hosting Monsters of Webcomics, an exhibit which explores and celebrates a growing body of work created on the web. The exhibit, which is running through December 6, hosted two opening receptions with Nick Gurewitch, whose popular Perry Bible Fellowship, a hysterically satirical and very adult look at the human condition, is a great example of what web comics have to offer.
Webcomics have been gaining ground, pushing boundaries and expanding the opportunities for creators for some time now. This exhibit is intended to “showcase of some of the best and boldest work published on the World Wide Web.” Cartoonists include Jesse Reklaw (Slow Wave), Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant!), Phil and Kaja Foglio (Girl Genius) Dorothy Gambrell (Cat and Girl), Nicholas Gurewitch (The Perry Bible Fellowship), Jen Manley Lee (Dicebox), Dylan Meconis (Family Man), Chris Onstad (Achewood) and Spike (Templar Arizona).
Publishing on the web does not mean that artists will not also work in print. For those who prefer to hold a book in their hands, many of the exhibiting cartoonists have had collections of their comics published. Dark Horse Comics, who co-sponsored the exhibit, has published well-received collections of The Perry Bible Fellowship, Slow Wave and Achewood, the second volume of which was just released.
Print collections of Girl Genius and Templar Arizona are also available. Aside from the artists featured in the exhibit, Monsters of Webcomics also includes a virtual gallery to highlight many other cartoonists working online. More information about the exhibit is available here.
