Capt’n Eli Lesson Plans Available Online
Nemo Publishing has posted comprehensive lesson plans to support their Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli series of graphic novels.
Written for all ages, the Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli follows the exploits of a young boy with extraordinary scientific abilities and mysterious ties to the sea. Blending the traditions of classic adventure comics such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers with modern 3-D CGI effects, Capt’n Eli’s voyages offer plenty of connections to history, geography and science, as well as language arts.
The lesson plans were created to explore these connections in depth, providing teachers with classroom activities and resources related to the adventures in the graphic novel series.
Created with the constructivist classroom in mind for grades 4-8, the lesson plans cover such topics as web research, map making, the relationship between mass, buoyancy and density in how a submarine works and principles of design and storytelling in creating original comic strips. New media and technology are incorporated in a history lesson plan featuring a web quest.
The lesson plans and additional resources are available at the Capt’n Eli official website. By showing the range of topics that can be explored through the Capt'n Eli books, these thorough and creative lessons are a great illustration of how graphic novels can be used as innovative teaching tools.
