Graphic Novels Take Center Stage at Book Expo America

Graphic novel publishers were an encouraging presence at Book Expo America (BEA), with Marvel Comics hosting a party in honor of their 70th anniversary, and publishers such as Image, IDW and Dark Horse announcing exciting new projects.

Among these, IDW will adapt a number of stories from horror writer Robert Bloch, and Dark Horse will publish The Last Dragon, an original graphic novel by renowned fantasy, sci-fi and children’s author Jane Yolen.

Book Expo America (BEA) is the premier event for the North American publishing industry. This year’s BEA took place on May 28 – May 31st at the JacobK.JavitsCenter in New York City, New York. Featuring over 500 authors and over 1500 exhibitors, BEA has become a showcase event for graphic novel news and enthusiasm.

Attendees lined up to have graphic novels and comics signed by a number of established or up and coming creators, including Tara McPherson (Lost Constellations: The Art of Tara McPherson) Chris Claremont (X-Men: Forever) Barry Lyga (Wolverine: Worst Day Ever), Chris Giarusso (G-Man) and more!

Librarians were treated to a panel on Hot Fall Graphic Novels for Libraries, where key librarians discussed a number of titles to look out for in the months ahead. Moderated by John Shableski of Diamond Book Distributors, panelists included Eva Volin, Supervising Children's Librarian for the Alameda Free Library; Jesse Karp, Early Childhood and Interdivisional Librarian for the Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School; Barbara Moon, Youth Services consultant for the Suffolk Cooperative Library System; and Christian Zabriskie, Young Adult Librarian for Queens Library.
