Hugo Award Nominees Announced

Anticipation, the 67th World Science Fiction Convention, has announced nominees for the 2009 Hugo Awards, including a number of graphic novels and superhero films.

Named in honor of Hugo Gernsback, founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories, the Hugos are handed out to the creators of the year’s best science fiction and fantasy works. Winners will be announced at this year’s Hugo Awards Ceremonies during the 67th World Science Fiction Convention, which will be held at the Palais de congrès de Montréal in Montréal, Quebec from August 6th to 10th.

Nominees in the Best Graphic Story category include Dabel Brothers’ The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle (ISBN: 9780345507464), Airship Entertainment’s Girl Genius Volume 8: Agatha Heterodyne and the Chapel of Bones (ISBN: 9781890856472), DC Comics/Vertigo’s Fables TP Volume 11: War and Pieces (ISBN: 9781401219130) and Y the Last Man Volume 10: Whys and Wherefores (ISBN: 9781401218133), the Taylor Corporation’s Schlock Mercenary: the Body Politic and Dark Horse Comics’ Serenity: Better Days TP (ISBN: 9781595821621).

Other nominations of note to graphic novel readers include HarperCollins’ Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (ISBN: 9780060530921) in the Best Novel category, Underwood Books’ Spectrum 15: the Best in Contemporary Fantasy Art (ISBN: 9781599290270) in the Best Related Book category, and an impressive array of movies adapted from superhero comics in the Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form category. These include Warner Brothers’ The Dark Knight, Dark Horse/Universal’s Hellboy II: the Golden Army and Paramount/Marvel Studios’ Iron Man.
