Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard Book Wins Newbery Award

The famed graphic novel author was honored by the American Library Association on January 26, when The Graveyard Book won the 2009 John Newbery Medal, which recognizes the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature.

The Graveyard Book tells the story of Bod, an unusual boy who inhabits an unusual place - he's the only living resident of a graveyard! Raised from infancy by ghosts, werewolves, and other cemetery denizens, Bod has learned the antiquated customs of his guardians' time, as well as their timely ghostly teachings in a supernatural tale reminiscent of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.

The Graveyard Book features illustrations by Dave McKean, whose artwork has previously been paired with Gaiman’s writing in such well-received projects as the Sandman series and the young adult novel Coraline, which has also been building interest with an upcoming film adaptation.
