Developed by The New Yorker art director Françoise Mouly, TOON Books has released a number of graphic novels aimed at beginning readers, earning rave reviews for the quality of their books. Featuring reading levels as well as teaching guides, TOON Books' releases are meant to not only entertain kids, but help them develop reading skills.
TOON will release two new graphic novels in March: Renee French's Barry's Best Buddy and Philippe Coudray's Benjamin Bear in Bright Ideas.
Written and drawn by Eisner-nominated cartoonist Renée French, Barry's Best Buddy ($12.95, 978-1-93517-921-4) is a Level 1 book designed to be enjoyed by the youngest readers on up. What's waiting for Barry at the end of the walk? The ridiculous hat his friend Polarhog forces on him? No, that's only a distraction from the real surprise! With humor and poignancy, Barry's Best Buddy is made to be read aloud with a grown-up or by kids all on their own.

Philippe Coudray offers the follow up to his Benjamin Bear in Fuzzy Thinking with Benjamin Bear in Bright Ideas ($12.95, 978-1-93517-922-1), a Level 2 graphic novel which features lessons and laughs. Benjamin Bear walks on water, rides a square-wheeled bicycle, and wears a fishbowl helmet under the sea. Told in the form of one-page comic strips, each of Benjamin's adventures is a hilarious gag, a puzzle, a mini physics lesson, or sometimes all three.

In addition to these two new books, TOON is also releasing paperback editions of six titles previously released in hardcover. In addition to the stories contained in the original releases, these paperbacks will also include the level of each book with the level's characteristics, reading guides for young readers, and listings of other TOON books with the same level. These are scheduled for release in February, and the TOON Books web site offers lesson plans for these titles.
