FX Orders Y: The Last Man to Series in 2020

On January 4, multiple outlets reported that -- after more than a decade in development for the large and small screens -- Brian K. Vaughan & Pia Guerra’s Vertigo classic Y: The Last Man is coming to television in 2020, with FX ordering the property to series.

FX released an early image from the series, shown above.

The series —  retitled Y in August — stars Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) as Yorick Brown, the last man alive on Earth, Imogen Poots (I Kill Giants) as his sister Hero, and Diane Lane (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) as their mother, Senator Jennifer Brown, and will debut in 2020.

Vaughan told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2017 that "When [Green] first pitched his take on it to Nina Jacobson and me a long time ago, he came in saying he wanted to do something about toxic masculinity. It felt very relevant, and unfortunately, I think it's only become more relevant with each passing day. His take on it was really brave and very different, but exciting as well. I really admire how audacious he's been with his translation."

Per the August 3 edition of IGN.com: FX CEO John Landgraf told attendees of the Television Critics Association Summer Press Event in Los Angeles that the network's series based on Vertigo's Y: The Last Man will simply be titled "Y".

"I guess you tend to see one or two word titles," Landgraf said. "'Y' seems like a provocative shape. We can do a lot with it graphically. It's a little mysterious."

Additionally, multiple outlets have reported that Yorick's monkey, Ampersand, will be a "mostly CGI" creation.

Deadline reported on July 31 that Academy Award-winner Timothy Hutton (American Crime, The Dark Half, Ordinary People) will play the President of the United States in the pilot for FX’s Y: The Last Man, based on the bestselling Vertigo series.

Per Deadline, “Based on the DC Comics series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Y traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male mammal save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival.”

Deadline reported on July 18 that actor/author/director Amber Tamblyn will join Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots and Diane Lane for the pilot of FX's Y: The Last Man.

According to the article, "Tamblyn will play Mariette Callows. Daughter of the President of the United States, Mariette has been groomed for a career in politics and to uphold her father’s conservative values."

Deadline reported on July 11 that Diane Lane (Martha Kent in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) has joined the cast of the FX pilot for Y: The Last Man, adapting the Eisner Award-winning Vertigo series following Yorick Brown, the lone survivor of a plague that wipes out all other men on Earth.

According to the article, “Lane will play Senator Jennifer Brown. A Junior Senator in her first term, Senator Brown has already made a name for herself in political circles for her willingness to put personal ideals above politics. She is also the mother of Yorick [played by Barry Keoghan] and Hero [Imogen Poots] Brown.”

In other casting, Lashana Lynch will play Secret Service Agent 355; Juliana Canfield will play Beth, a Brooklyn-based knife maker who ultimately falls in love with Yorick; and Marin Ireland will play Nora, the President’s senior assistant and right hand.
