Rick and Morty, created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, originated from an animated short for the Channel 101 film festival. Cartoon Network’s late night programming block, Adult Swim, approached Roiland and Harmon to develop a program based on the short. Inspired by the 80's hit Back to the Future, the series follows the misadventures of a cynical mad scientist named Rick, and his easily influenced grandson Morty. The general formula for Rick and Morty consists of two conflicting scenarios: an extremely selfish, alcoholic grandfather dragging his grandson across space for intergalactic and/or interdimensional adventures, intercut with domestic family drama.
Rick and Morty Volume 5 (978-1-62010-416-3, $19.99) is scheduled to release July 19, 2017 just in time for the third season of the hit television series. This volume features Eisner-nominated writer Kyle Starks (Sexcastle) in collaboration with series artist CJ Cannon in a three-issue story about the despicable Doofus Jerry and his attempt to take over the multiverse. Also included is the uncanny and sinister "Morty Shines," drawn by artist Marc Ellerby, the action-packed return of Tiny Rick in “Honey, I Shrunk The Ricks,” drawn by Kyle Starks.
