In 2015, a live-action movie adaptation of Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura's graphic novel I Kill Giants (978-1-60706-092-5, $15.99) was announced with Kelly writing the screenplay and Anders Walters (Helium) directing. Soon after, Zoe Saldana (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Madison Wolfe (The Conjuring 2) were cast as Mrs. Mollé, the school psychologist, and Barbara, the young mistfit protagonist. The graphic novel has won the Best indy Book of 2008 by IGN and the Gold Award at the 5th International Manga Award in 2012. I Kill Giants (978-1-60706-092-5, $15.99) is a coming-of-age story about Barbara Thorson - a girl battling monsters both real and imagined. An outsider, Kelly describes Barbara as "funny, but totally in geekland... a bit of a social misfit." Barbara is convinced that giants are real and coming to conquer the earth, and it is her job to stop them. Her fantasies begin taking form in her real life as she begins to see pixies and signs in the clouds, warning her of bad things that are about to come.
Walters and XYZ Films have recently released stills from the upcoming film, featuring Salanda and Wolfe as their respective roles. The stills feature Saldana fully clad as Mrs. Mollé as well as Wolfe sporting Barbara's iconic rabbit ears.
The film has yet to announce a release date but is expected to come out in 2017. For a preview of I Kill Giants (978-1-60706-092-5, $15.99) as well as the released stills, see below.
