A 10 year old girl makes a wish, and before she knows it is off on a magical quest in Otis Frampton's Oddly Normal Book 1 ($9.99, 978-1-63215-226-8) from Image Comics.
Oddly Normal is a young girl with pointed ears and green hair — a half-witch who will be the first to tell you that having a mother from a magical land called Fignation and a father from Earth doesn't make it easy to make friends at school! On her tenth birthday, she blows out her cake's candles and makes a disastrous wish. Now, Oddly must travel to Fignation to uncover the mystery of her parents' disappearance. Along with navigating a new world full of magic and wonder, Oddly must deal with the challenges of middle school, including crushes and monstrous bullies, while on a quest that will bring her face to face with Evil itself.
"During her time in this new world," Frampton explained, "Oddly must contend with the trials and tribulations of being a normal ten year old, but they take unusual and sometimes dangerous forms; bullying by ravenous vampires and werewolves … rivalries with full-blooded witches and broom races through canyons filled with deadly creatures … crushes on one of the most popular boys in the school who just happens to be a member of a super-hero team from Oddly's favorite comic book."
"While I would suspect none of "Oddly Normal" #1's readers have naturally green hair or pointed ears, Frampton constructs the character and her problematic world in such a wonderfully relatable manner that readers will find themselves aching for more," writes Comic Book Resources in their review of the first issue of the comic series, while Multiversity Comics states, "Anchored by a dynamic and engaging protagonist, and exploring an unpredictable world this title promises to bring readers on a journey worth taking."
Oddly Normal Book 1 is scheduled for March release and is recommended for Kids (6+) readers who enjoy fantasy and fairytale stories, and young protagonists.
