Robert Kirkman has achieved a reputation for bringing back the dead to massive acclaim for mature readers. However, the creator of The Walking Dead is also being celebrated for bringing another extinct creature back to life and turning him into an all-ages title: Super Dinosaur.
"Since becoming a parent, I wanted to create a comic book that parents can read with their kids or that kids can pick up and read on their own," said Kirkman. "We also wanted to create a comic that's appropriate for younger kids but doesn't talk down to them, so it will interest older readers as well!"
Written by Kirkman and illustrated by Jason Howard (the team behind The Astounding Wolf-Man), Super Dinosaur follows the adventures of ten year-old Derek Dynamo and his best friend - a nine-foot tall Tyrannosaurus Rex who loves to play video games when he’s not helping his human pal defend the world against evil.
In the newest graphic novel, Super Dinosaur Vol. 2 (978-1-60706-568-5, $12.99), available now, Derek and Super Dinosaur must rebuild their headquarters, the Dynamo Dome, in the wake of a massive battle. While Derek's family adjusts to the fact that they must now live in the dome, his father Doctor Dynamo discovers a shocking secret from his worst enemy. But worst of all, a powerful threat rears its head in the form of the Exile – a villain so powerful, Derek and Super Dinosaur must team up with one of their most fearsome foes if they have any chance of defeating him and saving humanity.
The series has garnered positive reviews within and beyond the comic industry. Comic Book Resources told readers: "A story that's titled – and stars – a 'Super Dinosaur' is certain to be a celebration of everything good about comics, right? Yes, indeed it is." Similarly, School Library Journal's Good Comics for Kids column praised: "Dinosaur lovers: All you have to know is there's a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the book and he wears a cybernetic power suit. Instant. Must. Read. For the rest of you, there’s a rollicking science adventure with vile villains and a good mix of family issues—and, of course, dinosaurs."
Super Dinosaur Vol. 2 is suggested for Kids (6+) and up.
