Review

There was no question that I would review this graphic novel. The artwork on the cover lured me in, and I could've sworn I heard a faint whisper of, "read me!"

Plus, my mother taught me well; I always listen to a book that calls out to me. Call it intuition. Perhaps superstition. Whatever you call it, here's some insight . . .

As if the cover is not aesthetic enough the pages in between that cover are even better. The artwork is cutting-edge and tempting enough to make this graphic novel a solid hit. The stories that accompany the artwork make this graphic novel a grand slam.

Written by five well-known and thoughtful storytellers (Beth Bracken, Blake A. Hoena, Donald Lemke, and Marin Powell) and illustrated by an equally talented group of illustrators (Sean Dietrich, Victor Rivas, Jeffrey Steward Timmins, Ricardo Tercio, and Erik Valdez Y. Alanis) readers meet familiar characters in brand-new retellings of their traditional stories. Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and his beanstalk, Red Riding Hood, and Rumpelstilskin each get their own retelling and new artwork: perfect stories to teach based on their own laurels, perfect stories to teach paired with a traditional telling.  

In short, no matter how you decide to teach this graphic novel (on its own and/or paired with original versions) you and your students are destined to enjoy this graphic novel.

Note: Relative to Common Core Standard alignment and instructor discretion this graphic text could be taught in both K – 5th grade classrooms and/or 6th – 12th grade classrooms, especially in regards to Key Ideas and Details.

Directions: Because most of the stories – if not all of them – will be familiar to us a logical reading strategy would be a KWL chart.  For each story students can discuss what they Know, what they Wonder, and what they Learn.

Dr. Katie Monnin is an Associate Professor of Literacy at the University of North Florida. Besides the joy that comes with reading comic books and graphic novels, Dr. Monnin enjoys a Peter Pan-ish life of researching and writing her own books about teaching comics, graphic novels, and cartoons: Teaching Graphic Novels (2010), Teaching Early Reader Comics and Graphic Novels (2011), Using Content-Area Graphic Texts for Learning (2012), Teaching Reading Comprehension with Graphic Texts (2013), and Get Animated! Teaching 21st Century Early Reader and Young Adult Cartoons in Language Arts (2013); Teaching New Literacies in Elementary Language Arts (in press, 2014).
